Hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in elderly women due to post-menopausal hormonal changes. Rosella tea (Hibiscus sabdariffa) contains active bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and anthocyanins which potentially act as natural antihypertensive agents. This study aimed to determine the effect of roselle tea administration on reducing blood pressure in elderly women with hypertension. This quasi-experimental study used a two-group pretest-posttest control group design, conducted in Bekasi Regency from January to February 2021. A sample of 34 hypertensive elderly women was selected using purposive sampling and divided into an intervention group (n = 17) receiving roselle tea twice daily for 7 days, and a control group (n = 17). Data were analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test and Independent Sample T-Test. The results showed a significant decrease in mean systolic (163.12 to 153.94 mmHg, p = 0.000) and diastolic blood pressure (102.12 to 97.06 mmHg, p = 0.000) in the intervention group, whereas no significant changes were observed in the control group. A significant difference in blood pressure reduction was found between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.000). In conclusion, roselle tea administration effectively lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive elderly women.
